Brain injuries: Family of accident victim dreads the diagnosis

by | Jan 30, 2017 | Brain Injuries |

Motor vehicle accidents can cause tremendous suffering. When a minor accident occurs on a typically busy Ontario highway, there is always a chance that more serious accidents will result. This was the situation for a young man when the car in which he was riding became disabled in a hit-and-run. Brain injuries are common in high speed accidents, and this man’s relatives wonder what will be his fate in addition to his other catastrophic injuries.

The car in which the 24-year-old man was a passenger was rear-ended, causing the vehicle’s engine to fail. The occupants of the car had no escape when a second vehicle struck it. The vehicle that rear-ended the car did not remain at the scene. Family members believe that, if the driver had stayed, his vehicle may have alerted other drivers and prevented the second, more devastating collision.

Instead, six people were taken to hospital. The young passenger was most severely injured and lies in a coma with life-threatening injuries. He suffered multiple rib fractures which seriously damaged his lungs. The impact crushed his abdomen and bowels causing extensive internal bleeding. As his family sees slow physical progress, they wait to learn if their loved one must endure the lifelong struggle of living with a brain injury.

While the victim in this accident has a long recovery ahead of him, his physical healing may be more difficult with the added complication of a brain injury. Traumatic brain injuries often mean a lifetime of medical care and special needs. Having an Ontario lawyer to help with the process of pursuing compensation raises the chances that a victim will be able to obtain excellent treatment while working toward recovery.
