Brain injuries: Pedestrian struck by falling brick

by | May 31, 2017 | Brain Injuries |

Life is unpredictable, and unanticipated incidents can cause catastrophic injuries. In the early evening of a recent Thursday, pedestrians on a sidewalk in an Ontario city were exposed to about 100 bricks that rained down on them. Reportedly, a section of a building’s roof collapsed, causing the rubble to drop onto the pavement in front of a restaurant. One person may have suffered brain injuries.

According to a police officer at the scene, the bricks broke away from the roof and landed on an awning. The awning then crashed onto the street and sidewalk. The officer reported that dozens of pedestrians dodged the falling bricks, and most of them escaped unscathed. However, paramedics attended to one person who had to be rushed to a hospital for treatment of a serious head injury.

There were no further reports about the condition of the injured pedestrian. However, being struck on the head by a falling brick can obviously lead to traumatic brain injuries. Medical expenses for emergency treatment may be substantial, and depending on the severity of the injury, the victim may need ongoing care in the future.

After accidents such as this one, victims may pursue financial relief through the Ontario civil justice system. A premises liability claim may be filed against the owner of the building that collapsed and caused possible brain injuries. However, this is a complicated field of the law, especially the task of establishing negligence. Determining the value of the claim to ensure that future medical expenses, lost income and more are covered is also better calculated by professionals. Some victims choose to utilise the services of experienced personal injury lawyers to navigate these types of lawsuits for them.
