Car accidents in Ontario and elsewhere can cause irreversible, life-altering injuries. Many of these incidents result in traumatic brain injuries that may prevent victims from ever having a normal life again. Severe TBI can leave a crash victim dependant on others and too often such hardship is caused by the negligence of another party.
It is yet unclear exactly what happened when the driver of a car that crashed in the early morning hours of a recent Thursday. Both the driver and his passenger, both young men in their 20s, were critically injured. The only information provided by the Ontario Provincial Police stated that the crash occurred at an on-ramp to Highway 417 and that they believe speed played a role in the accident.
Paramedics said both occupants’ injuries were life-threatening. The trauma suffered by the driver was multi-system, while the passenger’s injuries included significant head trauma. However, the extent of the brain injuries was not detailed further.
Typically, a seriously injured passenger can pursue recovery of damages. The financial impact of life-changing injuries can be severe and could be long-term. Regardless of the relationship with the driver, the passenger may file a personal injury lawsuit in an Ontario civil court. If the driver in this instance does not survive, claims may be filed against his estate. The nature of an accident victim’s injuries may necessitate the services of an experienced personal injury lawyer who focuses on helping car accident victims with brain injuries to navigate claims to obtain financial relief.
