Cyclist in coma after suffering brain injuries, broken neck

by | Jul 22, 2020 | Brain Injuries |

Cyclists in Ontario and elsewhere are vulnerable. With hardly any protection, bicycle riders usually suffer critical or even catastrophic injuries when struck by cars. Even with a riding helmet, brain injuries can occur. One such an accident left a 26-year-old amateur athlete and teacher in a coma. On June 26, the man was struck by a vehicle while cycling in the interior.

The details of the accident were not reported, except that the cyclist suffered multiple critical injuries. Reportedly, an artery in his arm was severed, and he had 10 fractured ribs. Furthermore, the teacher’s neck was broken, and he suffered a severe brain injury and extensive nerve damage.

Although a vascular surgeon successfully addressed the severed artery, the cyclist remained in a coma. The extend of the injuries might be severe enough to prevent the victim from going back to teaching, and his cycling future is also questionable. His friends started a GoFundMe account to help him deal with the financial consequences.

When a driver negligently causes a crash with a bicyclist, a personal injury lawsuit may be appropriate. The support and guidance of an Ontario lawyer with experience in dealing with claims that involve brain injuries can be invaluable. Legal counsel can help to establish negligence on the part of the motorist who caused the injuries. The lawyer can also help with documenting the claims for current and future injury-related damages. Moreover, the lawyer can determine a monetary value for pain and suffering to add to the documented claim to present to the court for adjudication.
